When it comes to what I wear whilst hitting the gym it’s important to look good and feel comfortable. Looking good makes you feel good and this should also extend to your gym kit. Wearing good sportswear can enhance your workout and allow you to see alignment and posture better than in a great big baggy t-shirt! But the one item I’ve never worn during my workouts is a heart rate monitor, silly really for someone who has a degree in Physical Education and Sport!!
Back in the day heart rate monitors used be a big band that you had to fit around your chest (in just the right spot or it wouldn’t work at all) to then link up to a cardio machine or cumbersome wristwatch, well things have definitely moved on from then.
I was offered a chance to try the Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist HR and jumped at the opportunity.
As you can see from my pics, it’s a beaut and comes in five colour ways including the ocean green I was using. It’s slim and super lightweight, i.e I could still bend my wrist and it wasn’t in the way, and for a technophobe, such as myself, I found it incredibly easy to set up and use. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of functions in this little power house, for a start it’s pre-loaded with 80 sports modes which you can select from when training to monitoring heart rate, calorie burn, distances, split times etc. It’s also water resistant up to 50m, has GPS route navigation, so you’ll never get lost on a run, and got me addicted to my step count!!
Of course there are a lot of sports HR trainer style watches on the market at the mo; Fitbit, Apple, Garmin, Polar but for me the Suunto offers style and substance. This watch worked perfectly with the rest of my everyday wardrobe and received a fair amount of acknowledgement on the school run. I think at £219.99 it’s a good investment if you’re looking for a watch that you can wear everyday and will also help you push the limits of your workouts whether that’s indoors or out navigating that urban jungle we live and train in.
