The little black dress, it’s for life, not just Christmas party season. In fact, an LBD is one of my summer holiday, suitcase essentials. Of course, all that Vitamin D (and sea) is a great time to experiment with colour, print and pattern, but there is something very chic about wearing black for summer.
Whilst white is the more obvious colour choice when it comes to your summer style due to its light reflecting properties, and many of us wanting to maximise that tan we’ve worked so hard on, why wouldn’t you reach for a whiter than white wardrobe. But for me black gives my outfit longevity, as in the kid’s sticky finger imprints are less noticeable, along with the inevitable makeup marks and any drink spillages – all of the above are regular features to any/all of my outfits!
So, the key to getting an LBD right in the summertime is, of course, choosing the right fabric. Natural fibres such as linen and cotton are obvious choices, but also look out for jersey, chambray and viscose. Viscose is a semi-synthetic material made from wood pulp, which whilst it may not sound appealing it will definitely keep you cool in the warmer summer months.
You may pay a little more for the breathable fabrics (and you may not, I often find 100% cotton shirts in Primark) but buy well and look after these pieces and they’ll look after your summer after summer. Here are a few of my favourite LBDs on the high street and online right now.
